| 26 Oct 2007 - Khao Sok - Jungle Trek, then off to Phuket

| Jungle Trek day! We crossed the river at the Elephant Hills camp by standing on a bamboo platform that a man pulled along on a rope that crossed the river. Then off into the jungle! We walked up a waterfall - luckily there was not too much water. It was very pretty but you had to be careful as it was slippery and muddy. We saw some poisonous plants, then whilst climbing up some rocks we saw a monkey, quite close! It ran off quickly. Series saw some more monkeys high up on the mountain, but we couldn't see them. Anyway, we walked for about 2 and a half hours, getting very hot and sticky, but enjoying it. Then we arrived at a little shelter where we had lunch. The cooking man had a campfire going, and we had tea in bamboo cups. Then he made coconut milk (what's inside a coconut is actually just water, but it tastes very nice and sweet) and he cooked us a coconut milk and chicken soup, thai style scrambled eggs, bbq pork on bamboo skewers, and then we ate it all with rice. After that we walked back the quick way (just half an hour) back to the river. Alice continued her boat-curse by stepping through the bamboo floaty thing! She just put a foot onto it and was in the river half way up her calf (you really can't say that was my own fault!) Luckily no cuts and they're going to fix the platform!
Back to the tent for a shower and a last use of the loo with a view, then we paid our bill and Series and Chen drove us to the Chedi (they are staying in Phuket as they have an early pick up in the morning). We were sad to say goodbye to Series who has been a great guide and made friends with Frigid.
The Chedi is nice - we have a little house with a bedroom /lounge and bathroom. Although it's not the same when no one can see you on the loo. We were exhausted after our trek, and the fact that there are loads of steps to our cottage/house/bungalow doesn't help! Everything is damp from the rain forest, so we're drying it out all over the place and have sent a load of soggy laundry to be done. Have no idea how we'll clean our boots! |
